Metamucil Fiber Helps With Weight Loss

Medical researchers at Tufts University in 2001 discovered that weight loss was linked to eating dietary fiber. When combined with a low calorie diet increasing fiber consumption produces a full feeling after eating. The addition of only 14 gm of fiber to the daily diet results on average in a 10% drop in total calories consumed. Loss of weight can be a direct result of this lower calorie regimen. The American Heart Association states that 25 to 30 gm of fiber should be consumed every day to produce optimum health. This study finds that increasing fiber intake to 25 gm or more on a daily basis could produce less obesity in North America. Metamucil products of different types can adde from 12% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of fiber in the case of Metamucil powder, and up to 20% of the RDA with fiber wafers.

Metamucil is a low calorie product. Fiber capsules contain just 2 calories each, and a single serving of Metamucil powder contains 25 calories. Metamucil fiber wafers are much higher, providing 120 calories for each serving of two fiber wafers. These fiber wafers are a very high fiber, and low calorie snack which can help in satisfying food cravings. Other makes of pysillium content products have very much the same calorie content, and usually cost less than the Metamucil brand. They are effective just as Metamucil is, but any clear color products should be avoided, since they do not "bulk up" when consumed.

The FDA rule is that a food containing less than 40 calories in each serving is considered by them to be a low calorie food, and foods which have 100 to 399 calories in each serving are listed as moderate calorie items. All Metamucil products fit into one of these two categories, and can be quite effective to help achieve weight loss, and also provide a healthy amount of fiber for the diet.

Metamucil is stated to be safe and reduces constipation problems. People report feelings of fullness, and occasionally bloating or abdominal pain is found. Some people may be allergic to pysillium products just as they are for some other products, but this is a fairly rare occurrence. Overall Metamucil and other similar fiber products have been found to be safe in use, and can help to achieve weight loss.
